Last week at the International Conference on Cyber Security, FBI Operations Director Chad Yarbrough discussed the FBI’s cyber mission, which he said is critical to national security in an increasingly digital battlespace. Unlike crime problems that may affect a single city or region, cyber threats are inherently national threats and defy state or county lines.

Together with our partners across the globe, we are taking what we’ve learned countering criminal organizations and using it against cyber criminals, OD Yarbrough said. The FBI uses a framework called the “key services model,” which breaks down the ransomware ecosystem into four essential services that criminals use to facilitate or conduct their attacks.

Targeting each of those services—digital infrastructure, tools and malware, communication channels, and illicit funds—is crucial to the fight against cyber crime. But we have the most durable impact when we disrupt all of them together, often by working in tandem with partners who have unique authorities and capabilities.
