CIA’s Mi-17 Helicopter Comes Home

On this day in 2001, a CIA team led by CIA operations officer Gary Schroen landed in Afghanistan’s Panjshir River valley northeast of Kabul. The team arrived just 15 days after the 9/11 attacks and three weeks before the arrival of the first U.S. Special Forces teams. The mission: to launch U.S. operations against al-Qa’ida and its Taliban supporters.
Operation JAWBREAKER serves as a prime example of the extraordinary capacity of CIA and the broader U.S. government to respond swiftly and decisively in defense of the Nation.
