Angela Aquino’s message to the ambassadors of the United Nation

Dear Ambassadors of the United Nations,
I am Amadea Angela Aquino, founder of the non-profit organization, Equal Rights for Children. We are dedicated to advocating for the rights of children born out of wedlock or those perceived as “illegitimate.” As an active partner in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we focus on the promotion of rights for these children and their mothers. Our efforts align specifically with SDG goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 16, and 17, and are guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We write to you today to highlight an alarming situation regarding the treatment of these so- called ‘illegitimate children’ in certain regions of the Middle East. Our collected data and information reveal disturbing trends. In some of these countries, unmarried women who become pregnant face imprisonment, with their newborns taken away, labeled as “children of no one.” We have received an increasing number of testimonies from foreign women workers, voicing their fear of governmental separation from their children due to their unmarried status.
We find these reports deeply troubling and implore the United Nations General Assembly and the UN Security Council to address this issue. It is essential to ensure compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, safeguarding these vulnerable women and children.
We express profound concern over the governing laws that lead to such heartbreaking separations, which happen through no fault of the children themselves. These laws deprive them of their basic rights to freedom and education, often leading to a life where they cannot even speak, write, or read, due to imprisonment from birth. It is important to mention that these children are also susceptible to exploitation, trafficking, and abuse, sometimes even used in armed conflicts due to the lack of equality, opportunity, and absence of supportive measures. No child should bear the brunt of their parents’ decisions regarding their marital status.

Therefore, we strongly urge the relevant Middle Eastern nations to engage in constructive discussions to rectify this dire situation as swiftly as possible. The welfare of the children is at risk, and every moment of inaction compounds this tragedy.
While this issue demands immediate attention, we sincerely hope that other policies leading to violations and discrimination against children born out of wedlock will also be given due consideration.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to your positive response and collective action to protect these innocent lives.
Sincerely,
Amadea Angela Aquino, Founder
