The 77th session of the UN General Assembly opened on Tuesday with its new president urging world leaders to respond to humanity\u2019s most pressing challenges, including the war in Ukraine, by working together and building bridges across what are \u201cdeep divides\u201d.
\nAcknowledging that the world faces uncertainty and widening geopolitical fissures, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si reminded delegates that the United Nations was created out of the ashes of war and destruction, with the intention of being \u201ca well of solutions\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cResponding to humanity\u2019s most pressing challenges demands that we work together, and that we reinvigorate inclusive, networked, and effective multilateralism and focus on that what unites us\u201d, he<\/p>\n

Ukraine war: \u2018A turning point\u2019<\/p>\n

Mr. K\u0151r\u00f6si underscored that the conflict in Ukraine has been a \u201cturning point\u201d, and unless the world is vigilant, the \u201cmethod\u201d of warfare stemming from Russia\u2019s invasion could become a part of the \u201ctoolkit of international life\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis war must be stopped. It kills people, it kills development, it kills nature and kills dreams of millions\u201d, he emphasised.<\/p>\n

The new president added that the risk of use of nuclear weapons is now higher than in the past 40 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis ominous reality calls all of us to unite around the<\/p>\n

\nNo \u2018business as usual\u2019<\/p>\n

Mr. K\u0151r\u00f6si also warned that conflicts will worsen as our planet heats up and its natural resources grow more scarce.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe water crisis is poised to become our next greatest threat. Recent weeks have seen record-setting temperatures, raging fires and devastating floods. It looks as if Mother Nature is fighting back\u201d, he said, further underscoring that the world cannot go back to \u2018business as usual\u2019 after COVID-19.<\/p>\n

The Hungarian diplomat also pointed out that while \u2018more manageable\u2019, the pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the globe, along with acute food insecurity, soaring energy prices, record inflation and global supply chain disruptions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not be returning to the old normal. The only way to achieve better outcomes is to transform. The contours of the transformation we need are already known. The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework, the Paris Agreement and Our Common Agenda, all point us in the right direction. What remains to be seen, is whether we will deliver\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

\nScience as a guide<\/p>\n

The new General Assembly president highlighted that his tenure would push \u201csolutions through solidarity, sustainability and science\u201d, enhancing the role of science in the UN body\u2019s decision shaping.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will work to foster measurable progress in the sustainability transformation \u2013 and cultivate the solidarity we need to achieve breakthroughs or to avert future disasters. Taking stock of the Sustainable Development Goals is simply not enough. We need to have more science by our side if we want to realize the Goals by 2030\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. K\u0151r\u00f6si also committed to engaging meaningfully with civil society partners, academics, the private sector as well as researchers and practitioners to lend solutions that are rooted in facts, verified information and science.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must also reach out actively to young people, engaging them in what we do so that when they sit in these seats, they can come with better plans and better ideas than we did\u201d, he added, noting the recent landmark resolution to create a United Nations Youth Office.<\/p>\n

\nContinuing challenges<\/p>\n

The UN Secretary-General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, was the second to speak during today\u2019s General Assembly session.<\/p>\n

He congratulated Mr. K\u0151r\u00f6si and underscored that unfortunately, the challenges that defined the 76th session, are still present.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe face a world in peril across our work to advance peace, human rights and sustainable development\u201d, he said, calling for solidarity to demonstrate the great promise and the potential of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

Mr. Guterres told delegates at the General Assembly that the world is looking at them to use all the tools at their disposal to negotiate, form consensus and offer solutions.<\/p>\n
