Iconic building, called \u2018greatest monstrosity ever constructed\u2019 by Hoover himself, to be closed down<\/span><\/p>\n

The FBI director, Kash Patel, said the law enforcement agency\u2019s sprawling but ageing J Edgar Hoover building in Washington<\/span><\/a> DC will be closed down and the agency will move into existing offices elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Some FBI workers will report to the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in the US capital to occupy the former offices<\/a><\/span> of the US Agency for International Development, which was dismantled by the Trump administration earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter more than 20 years of failed attempts, we finalized a plan to permanently close the FBI\u2019s Hoover<\/span> headquarters<\/span><\/a> and move the workforce into a safe, modern facility,\u201d Patel posted to social media site X. \u201cThe Hoover Building will be shut down permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patel added: \u201cThis decision puts resources where they belong: defending the homeland, crushing violent crime, and protecting national security. It delivers better tools for today\u2019s FBI<\/a><\/span> workforce at a fraction of the cost.\u201d<\/p>\n

In November, leaders in Maryland sued the Trump administration after it scrapped plans to move the bureau\u2019s headquarters to the state<\/span><\/a>. The lawsuit pointed out that Congress had already appropriated funds for th<\/span>e<\/span> relocation.<\/p>\n

The brutalist J Edgar Hoover building was designed<\/a>in the 1960s, when it was also conceived and constructed. It was often criticized for breaking with the style of other federal buildings. Former FBI head Hoover himself once called it \u201cthe<\/span> greatest monstrosity ever constructed in the history<\/span> of Washington<\/span><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n
