Fans of vintage cars, antique watches or other items might post publicly on social media, making them<\/div>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>vulnerable to bad actors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCriminals use personal interests to make their criminal actions appear authentic which decreases the chances of being caught,\u201d Rose said, adding, \u201cAI technology can analyze social media content to detect personal interests and life milestones which allows it to generate messages that seem personalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Since 2024, the scam has reportedly been used to steal <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/fbi-warns-seniors-about-billion-dollar-scam-draining-retirement-funds-expert-says-ai-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:over $1 billion;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"7\" data-v9y=\"1\">over $1 billion<\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> in funds, with the majority of victims<\/span> being at least 60 years old, according to FBI data.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese attacks are not just simple phone calls or phishing emails\u2014they\u2019re complex operations that involve multiple impersonators, spoofed phone numbers, and coordinated follow-ups,\u201d Scott Davis, chairman of the Cybersecurity Association of Pennsylvania, said in a recent <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"link \" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/news\/2025\/08\/cybersecurity-group-warns-of-phantom-hacker-scams-targeting-seniors.html?utm_campaign=pennlive_sf&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:interview;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">interview<\/a><\/span>. \u201cSeniors are being tricked into believing they\u2019re protecting their money, when in reality they\u2019re handing it straight to criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">\u2018Tech support\u2019 and the first phase<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While pretending to work in tech support for a legitimate company, the scammer will use a phone call, text, email or pop-up window to contact the victim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Once the victim calls for tech support help, the scammer instructs them to download a program giving access to the victim\u2019s computer.
